FOOD AND WINE MATCHING

Highly perfumed food and wine - American Express Column May-June 2007
May-June 2007 issue of the American Express Column,

"Traditionally muscled out of the bay by the ever-boisterous beer with washing down Asian dishes, Jane Anson suggests grape instead of grain as the ideal accompaniment for everything from sushi to curry."

Château La Rose Bellevue - Premières Côtes de Blaye - Cuvée Tradition 2006

"From the often overlooked Premières Côtes de Blaye region of Bordeaux, this lovely sauvignon blanc is unoaked, so make the most of its clean, fresh flavours with sashimi or sushi. There is also an excellent lightly oaked version (Cuvée Prestige) that is perfect with the rounder flavours of Chinese food." Jane Anson

WINE TRAVEL GUIDES 2007

WRITTEN BY JANE ANSON IN
www.winetravelguides.com

We were kindly selected by Jane Anson to represent our wine region for Cellar Door Visits:

"The truly charming and enthusiastic Jerome and Valerie Eymas make this a great visit – but you're going to have to work to get there, as they are about 15 miles from the Charente border. Both of them have lived and worked in vineyards in Australia , Chile and Argentina , and have a global perspective on winemaking that is refreshing and worth delving into during your visit. Jerome has also worked in champagne, and with some of the top producers in Cote Rotie and Condrieu. He says he learnt meticulous cleanliness in the cellars from the Champenoise, and the tricks of cold maceration and use of inert gases to combat oxygenation from the Australians – these are knowledgeable wine makers, now concentrating their efforts on a humble Cotes de Blaye.
Details: They've really embraced wine tourism, no doubt inspired by their time in Australia . By summer 2007, they will have opened a ' Secret Garden ' within the grounds where you can take a picnic and their wines. Free tour and tasting, Monday to Friday from 2-5pm (no need to call ahead usually, but as this is a long way up, I recommend that you check first). Groups welcome, by appointment. Very good English spoken.
Jane Anson"

GUIDE HACHETTE 2007

Tasting Notes from Guide Hachette 2007:

Château La Rose Bellevue
Cuvée Prestige Rouge 2004*

"A successful combination of Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the sandy soil mixed with gravel.
Jérôme Eymas has used this to best advantage along with his wine making experience.
After ageing for 12 months in Oak barrels, this vibrant black Cuvée consists of fine aromas of red fruits together with integrated tanins.
This produces a rich and round bodied wine with the flavours of ripened black fruits with elegant tanins.
The fresh finish lasts a long time and the wine will be at its best in 3 years time.
Château La Rose Bellevue
Cuvée Prestige Blanc 2005*

The Cuvée Prestige White 2005 is equally fine and well balanced."

TASTED SUMMER 2007

The Best Sommelier of the World 2007 tasting
Best Sommelier of the World 2007, Andreas Larsson, tasting notes of Premieres Cotes de Blaye in magazine TASTED, Summer 2007 issue

Charm, structure and fruit"
"I have been very impressed by the charming, round, perfumed and fruity yet structured wines from Côtes de Blaye and Blaye. This appellation covers almost 6 000 hectares and the wine styles differ a lot according to where the vineyards are situated. (...)Most wines in the tasting had the typical charactere of a modern winemaking style yet retaining finesse and elegance.
2004 Premieres Côtes de Blaye
My Top Pick
CHATEAU LA ROSE BELLEVUE - 2004 PRESTIGE
The colour is very dense and dark ruby, the nose is expresive with elegant dark fruit -black currants, plums with freshly ground coffee and leather, the palate is nicely structured with ripe tannins, dark fruit and a well integrated acidity, it has an excellent lenght. Charming and modern, yet classically structured with layers of nice dark fruit."

LA REVUE DES VINS DE FRANCE, May 2006

Red Cuvée Prestige 2004:
Cuvée rewarded with 5 stars /****(*)
"Rich concentration. The attack is powerful with silky tannins and round smoky hints. Wonderful lenght and full in the mouth. Modern style. Excellent."

MAXICUISINE N°34, April/May 2006

(p.78) To Mrs Tezé's question (from Le Mans):
"My daughter is organising her twenthieth birthday party. An endless buffet of "delicatessen", pizzas, cheeses and homemade cakes will be given to our guests disposal. Which wine would go the best with the buffet?"

The Château La Rose Bellevue white Prestige 2004 has been selected by MAXICUISINE.
RE: "If there are few guests, you can choose a Côtes de Blaye, very luscious but a little bit more expensive. You will enjoy its spicy structure and its powerfull tannins which prolong the strong flavour. This generous wine is perfect with delicatessen and pizzas."

Guide HACHETTE des vins 2006

Cuvée Tradition white 2004* : "This Cuvee is made from Sauvignon Blanc with a hint of Muscadelle which grew up on sandy soil with gravel. The nose is very opened and reveals flowers notes, marmelade and apricot. In the mouth, it develops fresh and fruity flavours. Very pleasant wine which can be drunk such as it is or with seafoods."

Cuvée Tradition red 2003* : "The nose is powerful and evokes notes of morello cherry, black currant, blueberry and a hint of soft tannins. In the mouth, it is souple and vivid. Fruit and tannins are well-intagrated. It finishes on mineral and slightly wooded tannins which will mellowed within the next twelve to twenty-four months."

THE WINE ENTHUSIAST, April 2005 - Roger VOSS tasting notes

88 : Chateau la Rose Bellevue 2002
Cuvée Prestige Blanc
Bordeaux White Blend
Premieres Cotes de Blaye
$12
Enticing aromas of green plums lead to a rich, ripe and intense wine packed with wood and fruit flavors. This wine, a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and the more aromatic Muscadelle, is a fine wine full of fresh fruits and spice. Best Buy.

87 : Chateau la Rose Bellevue 2000
Cuvée Prestige
Bordeaux Blend
Premieres Cotes de Blaye
$13
This has pure, black currant fruit aromas and flavors, and wood and acidity on the palate. It is packed with fresh, vibrant fruit.

85 : Chateau la Rose Bellevue 2002
Cuvée Prestige
Bordeaux Blend
Premieres Cotes de Blaye
$12
A very youthful wine that needs time. It has coffee bean aromas and accents of wood and black currants. Needs time for the acidity to develop and soften. Give it 4-5 years.

84 : Chateau la Rose Bellevue 2002
Cuvée Tradition
Bordeaux Blend
Premieres Cotes de Blaye
$8
This is a simple, tank-aged wine, without any pretensions to complexity. But it has full, red fruit and licorice flavors, plus good tannins. For the difficult 2002 vintage, this is a good wine. Best Buy.

Jancis ROBINSON, private tasting notes

My favourites were the 2004 Sauvignon Blanc and the 2003 red Prestige.
The Sauvignon Blanc is probably the most distinctive wine of the four.

Chateau La Rose Bellevue, Sauvignon Blanc Tradition 2004 Premieres Cotes de Blaye
Fresh nose, off-dry, very full, fruity palate. Clean and mouth-filling. Ripe face of Sauv Blanc - some Sauv Gris and Muscadelle.A good aperitif.

Chateau La Rose Bellevue Blanc Prestige 2002
Premieres Cotes de Blaye
Oak a little dominant on the nose - slightly too heavy for the fruit
intensity. Some oiliness and perhaps too much simple grapiness on the finish.

Chateau La Rose Bellevue Rouge Tradition 2002
Premieres Cotes de Blaye
Attratctive ripe, relatively simple fruit aromas. Clean and fresh. Well balanced. Straightforward. Only just enough fruit on the mid palate to make an impression on the UK market, I regret, since so many drinkers here are accustomed to Australian alcohol levels (a shame!).

Chateau La Rose Bellevue Rouge Prestige 2003
Premieres Cotes de Blaye
Well mastered oak. Good harmonious blend of well integrated oak with ripe fruit. Very clean and assertive. Neat. Already starting to open. This could be drunk with food with pleasure already.

Robin Garr's winelovers' page "A taste of Bordeaux"

...Chateau La Rose Bellevue 1997, Premieres Cotes de Blaye ($10.95):
From the same area as the La Tonnelle, but what a difference in flavor. The nose is Bing cherry and a little black currant. The cedar jumps out on the palate, (which is a reflection of top-quality French oak cooperage), a little smoke and a hint of mint. There is plenty of tannin on the back and loads of fruit up front on the palate. It has a beautiful, lingering, woodsy finish. I loved this wine on its own as well as with a wide variety of food. It is available at the wine stores and on Dennis' list as well...

Cuvée Prestige 2001 - Blind tasting and comments :
***(*) very good, deserve to be prefered for its complexity, elegance and delicacies.
Nose dominated by the ripe fruit and lightly smoked. Beautiful mouth with a nice structure, good fruit in which are melted hot hints of light but discret oakiness.
Very fruity especially the final. Well-balanced and beautiful length.
